Percentage change equals (new - old) divided by |old| times 100. A positive result means an increase.

How is percentage change calculated?

The change equals (new value - old value) divided by the absolute value of the old value, then multiplied by 100. Dividing by the absolute value means a drop from 100 to 50 is exactly the reverse of a rise from 50 to 100.

What about a zero starting point?

Percentages need a reference point, and division by zero is not defined. When the old value is zero the tool shows the absolute difference instead and clearly warns that a percentage cannot be computed.
