How to calculate a loan EMI (monthly payment)
EMI stands for Equated Monthly Instalment — the fixed amount you pay every month to repay a loan plus its interest. Knowing the formula helps you compare offers and understand where your money goes.
The EMI formula
EMI = P x r x (1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n - 1), where P is the principal, r is the monthly interest rate (annual rate divided by 12, then by 100) and n is the number of monthly payments. You do not need to compute it by hand — but understanding each term tells you why a longer term lowers the payment yet raises the total interest.
At the start of the loan most of each payment is interest; over time the balance shifts toward principal. That is why paying extra early saves more than paying extra late.
How to estimate a payment with FreetoolsY
Open the Loan EMI Calculator, enter the amount, the annual interest rate and the term in years or months, and read the monthly payment plus the total interest.
- Enter the loan amount, annual interest rate and term.
- See the fixed monthly instalment and the total interest over the life of the loan.
- Compare two scenarios by changing the term to see the trade-off.
EMI versus other ways to borrow
A fixed EMI is predictable, which makes budgeting easy. The alternative — paying only interest and repaying the principal at the end — has lower monthly cost but far higher total cost and more risk.
To see how savings grow by the same compounding maths, the Compound Interest Calculator applies the same formula in reverse, and the Percentage Calculator is handy for quick rate comparisons between offers.
