How do Roman numerals work?
Roman numerals use letters to represent values: I is 1, V is 5, X is 10, L is 50, C is 100, D is 500 and M is 1000. Values are usually written largest to smallest and added together.
When is a smaller numeral subtracted?
When a smaller numeral appears before a larger one, it is subtracted. IV means 4 (5 - 1), IX means 9 and CM means 900. This keeps the notation compact instead of writing four equal symbols.
What is the maximum number?
This tool converts numbers from 1 to 3999. Larger values were written with special bars in antiquity, so the classic system shown here normally stops at MMMCMXCIX.
