What does this calculator estimate?

It estimates the US federal income tax on your annual income using the 2025 marginal brackets. It shows taxable income, the tax owed, the effective rate and the marginal bracket your income falls into.

What is the standard deduction?

It is a fixed amount subtracted from gross income before tax. This tool applies the 2025 single-filer standard deduction of $14,600; uncheck the box to ignore it.

Marginal vs. effective rate — what's the difference?

The marginal rate is the tax rate on the last dollar earned. The effective rate is the average rate on the whole taxable income. They are usually different because a US tax bracket only applies to the income within that range.

What is not included?

State and local taxes, FICA/Social Security and Medicare, credits and itemized deductions are excluded. The estimate is useful for planning but not a substitute for tax software.

How is the tax computed?

Each bracket's rate is applied only to the slice of income inside that bracket, then all slices are added together. The table below marks the bracket active for your income.
