How is ASCII art created?

The image is downsized to a tight grid and every cell is turned into its brightness. A ramp of characters, from a space up to the @ sign, replaces each brightness so a picture emerges from text.

Why does the output have a fixed width?

The width slider controls the character columns of the result. A realistic desktop value is 100–160 columns; very small sizes lose detail and very large ones overflow the screen.

What does the invert option do?

Inverting swaps the character ramp, so dark areas become bright and bright areas become dark. It helps when an image has poor contrast.

Can I copy the art somewhere?

The generated text is rendered in a plain pre-block. Select it and copy as keyboard text, then paste it anywhere that accepts plain text.

Is any image size supported?

Any common image format your browser can open works. The source is scaled internally, so large photos are handled just as easily as small icons.
